Route Notes

Walk Distance

The walk has a variable distance depending on where you want to go. From Gap Park to South Head allow approximately 20-30 minutes for a 3km round trip, taking in Camp Cove and Lady Bay Beaches, as well as Hornby Lighthouse.

Southward the walking track extends through Signal Hill Reserve, Lighthouse Reserve and Christison Park, taking in historic gun emplacements and Macquarie Lighthouse, Australia’s oldest Lighthouse. To Christison Park it’s approximately a 2km walk taking 25-35 minutes (one way) and double that return.

From Christison Park it’s also possible to continue south to the dramatically positioned Diamond Bay Reserve, Eastern Reserve and Rodney Reserve. Diamond Bay Reserve is another 500 metres south of Christison Park (2.5 kms from Gap Park & 5km round trip) while Rodney Reserve is about 4kms (50-60 minutes) from Gap Park (2 hour return) with Eastern Reserve (also known as Dover Heights Reserve) in the middle. All three parks offer some outstanding views, but Diamond Boy Reserve in particular is not to be missed.

Whale Watching

Probably one of the key attractions along this walk is the opportunity for whale watching at several points along the track. From April to mid August Humpback whales migrate from south to north along the Pacific Ocean coastline to mate, and return between mid August to mid December. From early October you’ll catch the calves returning with their mothers, which is probably the most popular period for whale watchers in Sydney.

Southern Right Whales also migrate through the winter, often stopping along the coastal bays to feed. If you see a whale close to the shoreline, it’s probably a Southern Right Whale.

Lighthouses & Shipwrecks

Sydney’s first (Macquarie) and third oldest (Hornby) lighthouse are both close to Gap Park, built in part as a response to tragic shipwrecks that occurred along this part of the Eastern Suburbs coastline. You can find a marker for one of these wrecks, The Dunbar, along the Gap Park Walk, as well as the ship’s anchor, which is presented as a commemoration and reminder.
