Where Is It?

Also known as Walter Read Reserve, the Paddington Reservoir Gardens are located on the corner of Oxford Street and Oatley Street in Paddington, directly opposite the Chauvel Cinema and Paddington Town Hall.


An elevator provides access to the sunken gardens for those who might have trouble using the stairs.

By Bus

The is a bus stop directly out the front of the park. Routes servicing this area include the 378, 382, 380, 352 and 353.

By Train

Museum station is the closest train station but it’s about a half hour walk so jumping on a bus down Oxford Street might be your best bet.

Things To Do

Hang Out In The Sunken Gardens

Open during the daylight hours, the sunken gardens are a great spot to escape the bustle of Oxford Street and relax. There are deck chairs available to move around in the shade while the pond and archways provide a unique backdrop. Sometimes there’s even a coffee guy on site.

On Leash Dog Friendly

Dogs are welcome in Paddington Reservoir Gardens but should remain on leash at all times.

History & Architecture

Originally, the Paddington Reservoir was a water reservoir fed from the Botany Swamps pumping station. It supplied water between 1866 and 1899. It wasn’t until 2006 that it was converted to Paddington Reservoir Gardens (or Walter Read Reserve) from plans by architect firm Tonkin Zulaikha & Greer and landscape architects JMD Design

Weddings & Venue Hire

Paddington Reservoir Gardens is an outstanding place for a wedding provided you can abide by the restrictions (max 50 people, no amplified music, 3 hour blocks only).     Sometimes there is a coffee stand in the gardens, otherwise, there is plenty of cafes, restaurants & pubs on Oxford Street.

    There are rubbish bins in the park.

    There are no toilets in the park. There is, however, a pub across the road 😉

  • Can I take my dog?

    There is a nice green space on top of the gardens where you can often find a couple of friendly pooches to socialise with. On leash only.

  • Can I lock my bike up

    Yes! There are a couple of bike lockups in the park.
