Leichhardt’s main village green is home to gardens, picnic areas and a large playground, as well as the occasional outdoor concert.

Getting To Pioneers Memorial Park, Leichhardt

Where Is It?

Located on Norton Street on what was once the Balmain Cemetery, Pioneers Memorial Park can be accessed from the City West Link, Parramatta Road or Allen Street by car. It is north of the main shopping strip on Norton Street.

Bus & Light Rail

Leichhardt North Light Rail is only a few minutes walk from the station. Buses that stop nearby include the 444, 440, 445, L37 and M10.

Bike Route

There are some good bike routes around Leichhardt including the Booth Street / Moore Street bike lanes.


The best street address is the corner of Norton and William Streets, Leichhardt NSW 2040.


Mostly street side parking along Norton and on William and Street and Derbyshire Road.

Take The Kids To Pioneers Memorial Park Playground

A fun and fantastic playground awaits the little ones at Pioneers Memorial Park, with play equipment like fort and bridge climb, sides, swings and ropes course. It has soft fall flooring and sun shades as well, making this a popular destination for local families.


Check Out A Show At The Bicentennial Rotunda

Free outdoor movies are just one of the events you’ll find at Pioneer Memorial Park in Leichhardt. There’s also Carols in the Park and other events throughout the year.


Pay Your Respects At The Memorial

There’s a lot of history at Pioneers Memorial Park. Beyond being built on the site of former Balmain Cemetery (there’s about 10 000 people buried there, most before 1908), the park also features a Memorial dedicated to those from the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.

    Famous for it’s food and dining, you are spoilt for choice along Oxford Street, be is an espresso or gelato from one of the many cafes, fine dining, or a burger, it’s all there in this historic inner west dining strip.

    Yes there are bins enough in the park.

    Yes, there is a toilet block in the park with disability access.

  • Can I take my dog?

    The eastern end of the park (wooded area) is off leash dog friendly while the western end is on leash only. Dogs should be kept clear of the memorial and playground.

  • Can I lock my bike up?

    There’s a couple of places around the park suitable to lock your bike up.



War Memorial Park

Large village green with an excellent playground for the kids, War Memorial Park hosts the Blues Festival every two years.


Whites Creek Valley Park

Idyllic picnic area with a great playground, outdoor basketball court, barbecues and a skate park. Definitely worth a look.
