Where Is It?

Thornton Playground is a hidden pocket park on Beresford Road. There is access to the park near the bend on Beresford Road and also via the walkway on Balfour Road.

Things To Do

Thornton Playground

The main drawcard is the playground, which includes a pretty big slippery dip built into the hill. It’s a great little spot in a quiet neighborhood.

Who Was George Thornton?

In 1860 George Thornton became the first Mayor of Woollahra Council (Chairman was term they used at the time). In 1880, he was the founding councillor of the ‘New South Wales Aborigines Protection Association’. Throughout his life he sat on numerous boards and commissions, and was an avid sailor.
George’s mother, Sarah Madden, was sent to NSW as a convict for petty theft. George’s father followed her to Australia.
George Thornton was born in 1819 and lived until 1901.
