Wombarra beach stretches south from Scarborough Beach a few kilometers north of Wollongong. Fishing and surfing are both popular attractions, but it’s also good for a splash, with lifesavers and flags most days.

The Scarborough Wombarra SLSC overlooks the northern part of the beach and there is a rock pool to the south that attracts it’s fair share of swimmers. The rock pool is a refuge from strong rips and seaweed, and good for moderate swimmers or those just starting out.

If you’re after a cheeky bite, the Scarborough Hotel is nearby.

Access to Wombarra Beach

Wombarra beach is just off Lawrence Hargreave Drive. Here’s a map link.

If the public parking is full there is easy parking on Reef Avenue. You’ll need to scale the grassy abutment down to the sand, which is pebbly, but pleasant enough to walk on bare foot. In the summer there is sun until evening. Come winter it dips behind the plateau by early afternoon leaving the beach in shadow, so make sure you plan accordingly.

Sometimes overlooked in favour of Coledale and Austinmer, Wombarra has plenty to offer. The proximity to the Scarborough Hotel is appealing, while the swell is attractive for surfers and fishermen, making Wombarra Beach is one of several great beaches north of Wollongong.
